Pregnancy is a normal healthy process for women. Most women experience healthy pregnancies and focus of health promoting models should be central in each stage of a childbearing women life.
These stages included preconception, prenatal, antenatal, labor and delivery and postpartum. Meaning health promotion before conception occurs, during pregnancy, during labor and delivery and during the postpartum period. The emphaisis to treat pregnancy as a disease or illness has de-emphasized the importance of health promotion.
Women need to become active and take responsibility for their health and become central to all health promoting and healthcare decisions that affect her and her newborn. Women need to become the expert in her own health promoting choices. Only they know what is right for them and their families.
Healthcare providers must be consider partners in health promoting activities and the experts when medical problems arise. The health of women, is vital for the health of our babies, families and communities. It is through health promotion can we achieve healthier moms, babies, families, and communities.
